Abstract
Introduction: the aim was to study the epidemiological aspects and management of liver abscess in the general surgery department of the Kankan regional hospital. Material and methods: This was a 5-year retrospective descriptive study from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2022. All patients with a liver abscess diagnosed and treated in the department were included in this study. Results: We collected 57 cases of liver abscess out of a total of 5455 patients hospitalized in the department, 1.04%. The ages of the patients ranged from 3 to 70 years with a mean age of 19.03 years. Children and adolescents were mainly represented,an average age of 7.48± 3.34 years with extremes of 3 and 13. Children under 13 were the most numerous, 54.38%. The male gender was in the majority (59.64%) with a sex ratio of 1.47. The average consultation time was 2.1 weeks. Right hypochondrium/epigastric pain and hepatomegaly were the main clinical signs. All patients received medical treatment before and after percutaneous drainage. Simple outcomes were simple in 80.7%, complications in 19.3% and deaths in 5.26%. bbConclusion: liver abscess is a common pathology. Its management in this context requires multidisciplinary collaboration between the pediatrician, surgeon and radiologist for better patient improvement.
